Betty Lamp

Betty Lamp
image
This lamp has two distinct ways of offering light. Historically, whale oil was used in the heart shaped container, and a wick was pulled through the opening to provide inexpensive and efficient light. (The whale oil was NOT the best smelling oil to use!) An original Betty Lamp might also have been found on a stand, like the lamp we have in the store. A candlestick has been added to this lamp for practical use in today's society where whale oil might not be so popular or available.

Rush Candlestick

Rush Candlestick
text
A "rush" candlestick was used when a family could not afford to purchase candles. They would dip rush into tallow (animal fat) and use a clip to hold it to a stand. Lighting the animal fat, they had made an inexpensive light for the evening. For more practical use in today's society, a candleholder has been added to this version of the rush candlestick. If you tip the candle back, you will find where the rush dipped in tallow would rest.
